The following definition was approved by the IFSW and IASSW General Assembly in 2014.

Global Definition of Social Work Profession “Social work is an individual profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social integration, and the liberation and learning of people. Social work is centered on the policies of social justice, human rights, collective responsibility, and respect for diversity. Social work theories, humanities, social sciences, and indigenous knowledge are deployed to work with people and structures to combat life and bring about beauty. The definition of social work can be developed at national and/or regional levels.” Purpose: To structure social service information that is based on human rights and social justice policies, has ethical sensitivity, is sensitive and open to scientific developments, has functional change principles, has the ability to increase the social functionality of the subscription, has professional interview and reporting skills, researches social resources, learns and has this record distribution, is interdisciplinary, supports social change, aims to solve problems, improve and liberate human components for people to change for the better, and for this purpose, intervenes in the points of employment by using theories related to human work and social systems with their environments, determines the deficiencies in practice by using research knowledge and skills, and develops and adds social policy.
